First Grade


Reading:
The learner will be able to...
  • read orally with fluency, accuracy, and understanding up to and including book 6 in the first grade reading program
  • apply phonetic rules to decode new words
  • identify prefixes and suffixes
  • answer comprehension questions in complete sentences using information from the story
  • sequence events in a story or process
  • read for fun outside the classroom

Math:
The learner will be able to...
  • compare numbers using greater than and less than.
  • know addition and subtraction facts to perform on a speed test at 70% or better
  • skip count 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's to 100
  • identify orally and in writing numbers with place value to the hundreds
  • use appropriate units of measurements in a given setting.
  • use given information to solve story problems.

Language:
The learner will be able to...
  • identify antonyms, synonyms, and compound words in lists.
  • use the four basic sentence structures in oral and written work
  • demonstrate noun/verb agreement in sentences
  • use correct capitalization and punctuation in different sentence structures
  • edit sentence and stories for correct punctuation and capitalization
  • compose stories with beginning, middle, and end.

Spelling:
The learner will be able to...
  • perform at 70% or better on weekly spelling tests
  • edit written work for spelling errors

Science:
The learner will be able to...
  • identify the parts of the body used for each of the five senses.
  • identify the properties of physical science at work in the world
  • categorize animals and their babies
  • discuss the metamorphosis of a butterfly
  • identify each elementary part of a plant and it's function

Social Studies:
The learner will be able to...
  • tell the basic history of the United States
  • use appropriate terminology to explain geography
  • know primary and intermediate directions on a map and complete a compass rose
  • know the continents and ocean of the world

Phonics:
The learner will be able to...
  • know and use prefixes and suffixes
  • recognize the number of syllables inwords
  • use alphabetical order
  • recognize and work with rhyming words, same sounding words, and contractions
